The concert begins with the lively overture to Rossini's opera L'italiano in Algeri written when the composer was only 21. Saint Saens also had a lifelong relationship with Algeria starting in 1867 when he first visited the country. And this is reflected in his Suite Algerienne.
Scenes from the The Nutcracker are chosen to please because of their familiarity and after the Interval the chorus will be singing in Haydn's Little Organ Mass which gets its name from the instrument's solo in the Benedictus played by the composer at the first performance..

Max Bruch 'Violin concerto No 1 in G minor' (Soloist Elfida Su Turan)
Felix Mendelssohn Symphony No. 3 'Scottish'
Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No 1 in G minor is one of the most popular concertos in the solo violin repertoire. It will be performed with Elfida Su Turan, the exciting Turkish violinist, as the soloist. Described as a violinist of exceptional artistry, Elfida Su Turan is a winner of the International Haslemere Strings Competition, known for her technical precision and emotional depth. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music under the guidance of So-Ock Kim. Her recent prizes include the RAM Concerto Competition, the Ilona Fehér Competition in Budapest, and 1st prize at the HISC. She has received the ‘Future’s Women Stars’ Prize from the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts and was awarded 2025-2026 LSO Conservatoire Scholarship.
The other two works in the Concert are the Overture in C by Fanny Mendelssohn - one of the few works attributed to her because of the limited opportunities available to female composers in the nineteenth century. Her younger brother Felix completes the programme with his Symphony No 3 'Scottish' which was inspired by the Romantic poetry of Ossian and Sir Walter Scott during a walking tour of Scotland.James Ross Conducts.

The 2025 summer 'Come and Play' sessions are here!
All sessions take place at St Christopher's Church in Haslemere (postcode: GU27 1DD).
A fun and exciting set of pieces to play through:
Monday 2 June - Schumann Sympnhony No. 1
Monday 9 June - Mozart Symphony No. 40
Monday 16 June - Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5
All sesssions are held 1930 - 2200. £10 fee per session to play, you can pay on the day.

Haslemere Musical Society Open Evening: Haydn’s Journey To The CreationIn this special open evening Haslemere Musical Society’s orchestra under the guidance of Dr James Ross invites you to experience how Haydn’s music matured and progressed to culminate in his finest work: “The Creation”.
The evening features not only extracts from "The Creation", including a number of tenor arias sung by HMS member Will Unwin, but also five of Haydn's symphonies spanning a 30 year period. Symphonies nos. 6 "Le Matin" and 7 " Le Midi" written at the beginning of Haydn's career are followed by nos. 41 and 80. The last of the five is Haydn's famous London symphony no. 104.
Singers are invited to join the chorus in a “Find Your Voice” evening featuring choruses from “The Creation” and led by Thomas Lydon. In a grand finale to the evening, chorus and orchestra will come together to perform the final chorus of Haydn’s great work.

Shakespeare's plays have been an inspiration for many composers. In this concert "with a difference" the music is illustrated by readings from the relevant plays, given by members of the Haslemere Thespians.

The Conductor is James Ross.
The Society is delighted to have its lead Cellist, Anna Hunt playing the Bruch Kol Nidrei which is subtitled Adagio on Hebrew Melodies for Violoncello and Orchestra.The Haydn motet, Insanae et variae cururae (meaning Insane and stupid worries flood our mind), is in two contrasting sections, the first one fearful and the second lyrical. The Dvo?ak Symphony written in 1875 is regarded as largely pastoral. The Schubert Mass in G Major, composed in 1815 remains the best known of Schubert's three short settings or missae breves.

On 1 February 2025 the Haslemere Musical Society will be holding another of its popular 'Come and Sing' sessions. If you have been thinking of joining a choir - maybe as part of a new year's resolution? - then this is your opportunity to come and try it out.
We will be working through and then doing an informal performance-style run through of one of the great choral pieces - Mozart's Requiem.
The piece will be accompanied by the Haslemere Musical Society's orchestra under the expert baton of Tom Lydon.
This is a great opportunity to try singing with a choir out. Maybe you sang in a choir in your youth and want to rekindle your passion for music? Maybe you've always enjoyed singing and wanted to try out singing in a choir.

The countdown for our December concert is on!
Less than two weeks to go now until our December concert on 7 December in Haslemere Hall. The concert will feature seasonal favourites like Holst's 'Christmas Day' and Blake's 'The Snowman', as well as a specially commissioned piece by HMS's composer-in-residence, Clive Osgood.
In addition, HMS's principal trumpet, Tim Milford, will play Haydn's 'Trumpet Concerto in E flat Major'.

Our October concert offers an unmissable chance to hear a well-known virtuoso piece by Saint-Saëns played by talented young violinist Molly Salvemini.
We are delighted that Molly will join us on Saturday October 12th to perform the dazzling Saint-Saëns Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso.
